Rep. Marci Mustello of Butler has voiced her concerns over Governor Josh Shapiro's proposed $48.34 billion budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year. In a statement, Mustello criticized the governor's budget as excessive and unsustainable.
"It is the governor’s privilege to share his personal wish list as part of his annual budget address," she said. Mustello drew attention to the proposal's timing alongside marijuana legalization efforts, remarking that "someone would need to be ‘high’ to support so much new spending."
Mustello expressed concern that the proposed budget would exceed current state revenues and deplete Pennsylvania’s emergency reserves, potentially leading to tax increases. She stated, "I believe [this] is not good for our businesses and not fair to Pennsylvania’s working families."
She emphasized that on initial review, "this proposal is simply not sustainable." As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, Mustello plans to examine the budget closely during upcoming hearings starting February 20. She aims to work with colleagues on making fiscally responsible adjustments.
