Rep. Marci Mustello of Butler has commented on Governor Josh Shapiro's proposed $45.8 billion budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year, following his address in Harrisburg.
Mustello described the budget proposal as a "wish list" and emphasized that it is only a starting point for discussions. She acknowledged some positive aspects of the budget, such as no new tax increases, increased education funding, and additional financial support for farmers. However, she expressed concerns about spending levels.
"Responsible budgeting is crucial to ensuring the long-term financial health of our state," Mustello stated. She highlighted the importance of maintaining a balanced spending plan while saving and investing for the future. According to Mustello, the current budget could deplete the state's Rainy Day Fund within five years, which currently stands at $5 billion.
Mustello stressed that effective budgeting requires making tough choices and prioritizing spending to ensure that Pennsylvania can continue providing necessary services and support to its citizens now and in the future.
"As a member of the House Appropriations Committee," Mustello said, "I look forward to working with my colleagues and the governor to ensure that a fiscally responsible budget is passed and that it will prove beneficial to all Pennsylvanians."
