In Butler, a poster coloring contest was held in the 11th Legislative District to mark Autism Awareness Month. Sponsored by Rep. Marci Mustello (R-Butler), the event aimed to educate students about autism and provide them with access to helpful resources.

“I am thrilled that more than 200 students participated,” said Mustello. “The purpose of the contest was for our students to learn more about this bio-neurological developmental disability. Knowledge is important for everyone. It is necessary to highlight and celebrate all people and embrace our differences.”

Nine winners were selected from different schools in the district across three age categories: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. A panel of three judges determined the winners in each group, with Mustello presenting special prizes.

The winners were as follows:

Elementary – grades K-5:

1st place - Paige Singer from McQuistion Elementary School, grade 4

2nd place - Olivia Bartolicius from South Butler Elementary School, grade 5

3rd place - Zeke from Broad Street Elementary School, grade 2

Honorable Mention - Justice from His Kids School, grade 5

Intermediate – grades 6-8:

1st place - Tegan Perez from First Baptist Christian School, grade 7

2nd place - Noah Simmons from Butler Catholic, grade 6

3rd place - Sofia Matonak from Butler Catholic School, grade 6

Honorable Mention - Isla Leyland, grade 6

Autism Awareness Month seeks to empower autistic individuals and their families by improving support and opportunities in education and other areas. In Pennsylvania alone, between at least 55,000 to possibly over 185,000 individuals are on the autism spectrum. Autism affects one in every forty-four children.
