Rep. Marci Mustello of Butler is organizing an event to help residents of the 11th District replace illegible license plates on their vehicles. The Hard-to-Read License Plate event will take place on Saturday, August 3, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company, First Responders Park.
The initiative aims to assist drivers in replacing damaged or hard-to-read standard and eligible vanity plates. According to state law, PennDOT must replace license plates that are deemed illegible at no cost to vehicle owners. A plate is considered illegible if its numbers or letters cannot be recognized from a distance of 50 feet due to blistering, peeling, discoloration, loss of reflectivity, or other damages.
Participants are required to bring their unexpired Pennsylvania driver’s license and current vehicle registration card. However, specialty plates such as those for veterans, Pennsylvania zoos, and college alumni cannot be processed at this event; drivers with these types of plates need to contact PennDOT directly for replacements.
Staff from Mustello's district office and the Saxonburg Police Department will be present to assist with completing necessary forms which will then be hand-delivered for processing. Replacement plates are expected to arrive by mail within a few weeks after submission. Both standard issue and personalized plates will be replaced free of charge by PennDOT.
“No registration is required for this event,” said Mustello. “We are committed to making this process as convenient as possible for our residents. I encourage anyone with a hard-to-read license plate to take advantage of this opportunity.”
The Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Company is located at 155 Pittsburgh St., Saxonburg. For further details, individuals can contact Mustello's office at 724-283-5852.
