Rep. Marci Mustello of Butler is encouraging students and schools in Butler County to engage in a poster coloring contest for Autism Awareness Month this April. The contest, which aims to raise awareness about autism, will have nine winners across the school districts in the 11th Legislative District.
Participants are divided into three age groups: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12, each with an age-appropriate poster design. Students need to include their name, school, and grade or age on their submissions. A panel of three judges will select winners from each group on May 9. Winners will receive a special prize from Mustello.
“I would like to see as much participation as possible while creating a fun way to bring attention to autism,” said Mustello. “It is important to highlight and celebrate all people and embrace our differences.”
Schools interested in participating should reach out to Mustello’s office at 724-283-5852 to specify the number of posters required for each age group. Her staff will distribute the posters along with contest guidelines.
Autism Awareness Month seeks to promote acceptance and understanding of autism, which affects one in every 54 children in the United States. The month-long observance was first initiated by the Autism Society in 1972.
